#50PreciousWords: School Musical Tryouts

Vivian Kirkfield has a fun online contest each year called 50 Precious Words. The challenge is to write a story for children ages 12 and under in only 50 words (not counting the title). It’s my first year to write an entry.

This very short story is taken from a middle grade novel involving a theater ghost. Hope you like it!

School Musical Tryouts

By Lisa Lowe Stauffer

Nik sang first, his voice filling the creepy theater.

Alone in the balcony, KeriLu cheered him on.

“Rather good!” a deep voice chuckled. “I say, is that comic opera?”

KeriLu’s neck hairs prickled.

Ghost or prank?

Either way—

She bolted, ruining Nik’s tryout.

“Not a playground!” The teacher glared.
