Two by Two: How this idea became a book
I had been writing for children since 1995, when I drafted my first middle grade novel. Six other novels followed . . . and no publishers were interested. But I wasn’t ready to give up.
In 2011, as part of an SCBWI Southern Breeze poetry retreat led by the fabulous children's poet Rebecca Kai Dotlich, we were given an assignment to write a poem. TWO BY TWO started as a simple, steady poem about Noah’s Ark (the first lines haven’t changed).
Later, after the retreat I was playing jazz while I worked on revisions. Monkeys got involved and those jazzy notes turned my staid lines into something a lot more fun.
